Tretinoin is used in the treatment of acne and acute promyelocytic leukemia.

How it Works

How Tretinoin works Tretinoin is a form of vitamin A. When applied to the skin, it reduces oil production, replenishes acne-prone skin, and helps keep your pores open. In the treatment of blood cancer, it slows the growth of certain types of diseased blood cells and promotes the growth of normal, mature cells in the bone marrow and blood. This mechanism is particularly effective in treating acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Tretinoin include erythema (skin redness), skin irritation, stinging sensation, itching, skin peeling, burning sensation, dry skin, skin pain, pharyngitis, headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, and bone pain.

  • You have been prescribed Tretinoin for the treatment of acne.
  • Clean the affected area with water and a non-medicated soap.
  • Let the area dry for 20-30 minutes before applying Tretinoin.
  • Note that it may increase the severity of spots or pimples in the first few weeks of use.
  • Continue using it as prescribed by your doctor.
  • It may cause a stinging sensation or a feeling of warmth when you first start using it; inform your doctor if this persists.
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight while using Tretinoin, as it increases skin sensitivity.
  • Use protective measures such as sunscreen or protective clothing.
  • Avoid face waxing and laser treatments while using this medicine, as it can make your skin more fragile.
  • Avoid taking tetracycline (e.g., doxycycline), as it may reduce Tretinoin's effectiveness.
  • Do not use Tretinoin if you are pregnant.
  • Inform your doctor if excessive skin dryness or sensitivity occurs.
