Chloramphenicol and Dexamethasone are used in the treatment of bacterial eye infections.

How it Works

How Chloramphenicol and Dexamethasone Work Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required for vital functions. Dexamethasone is a steroid medication that blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) responsible for causing redness, swelling, and itching following an allergy or infection.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Chloramphenicol and Dexamethasone include burning sensation in the eye, eye irritation, stinging in the eyes, and blurred vision.

Expert Advice

  • Your doctor has prescribed Chloramphenicol + Dexamethasone to treat your eye infection and alleviate your symptoms.
  • Use the medication twice a day (in the morning and evening).
  • If your symptoms are particularly severe, your doctor may recommend using it up to four times a day.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before applying Chloramphenicol + Dexamethasone.
  • To prevent contamination, avoid touching the dropper tip or allowing it to come into contact with your eye or any other surface.
  • If the dropper tip touches any surface, squeeze out two or three drops onto a tissue and rinse the tip with saltwater.
  • After instilling the medication, apply gentle pressure on the corner of the eye (near the nose) for about 1 minute to prevent the medication from draining out.
  • Avoid blinking or rubbing your eye after application.
  • Do not wear contact lenses until the infection has cleared up.
  • Eye infections can increase sensitivity to sunlight; wearing sunglasses may help alleviate this issue.
  • In addition to using Chloramphenicol + Dexamethasone, apply a warm compress to your eyes for relief from itching and burning sensations.
  • Take precautions to avoid spreading the infection to the other eye or to family members.
  • Regularly wash your hands (especially after touching your eyes) and avoid sharing towels or pillows to help prevent the spread of the infection.
