How Chloramphenicol, Dexamethasone, and Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate Work Chloramphenicol, Dexamethasone, and Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate is a combination of three medicines: Chloramphenicol, Dexamethasone, and Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria for vital functions. Dexamethasone is a steroid that blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause the affected area to become red, swollen, and itchy. Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate serves as a preservative.
