It is primarily used to treat anaemia in adult patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), including those who are on dialysis and those who are not. Unlike traditional treatments for anaemia that require injections (such as Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents), Desidustat is a convenient oral tablet. It works by mimicking the body's natural response to low oxygen levels (hypoxia), stimulating the production of red blood cells and improving the body’s ability to use its iron stores.

Rytstat 50mg Tablet 6s contains Desidustat, an oral medication specifically developed to manage anaemia in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Anaemia is a common complication of CKD, caused primarily by reduced production of erythropoietin, a hormone produced by the kidneys that stimulates red blood cell formation.

Desidustat belongs to a class of drugs called HIF prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs). It works by stabilising hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), which leads to increased endogenous erythropoietin production and enhanced red blood cell synthesis in the bone marrow. This action helps raise haemoglobin levels and improve the body’s oxygen-carrying capacity, alleviating symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath associated with anaemia.

Serious Side Effects (Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical attention if you experience):

• Thromboembolic Events: An increased risk of blood clots, which may present as sudden leg pain, swelling, or shortness of breath.
• Severe Hypertension: A rapid rise in blood pressure that causes blurred vision or severe chest pain.
• Seizures: Very rare, but possible if haemoglobin levels rise too quickly.
• Hyperkalemia: A rise in blood potassium levels, which can affect heart rhythm.

• Dosing Frequency: Desidustat is usually taken three times a week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), not every day.
• Administration: The tablet can be taken with or without food.

• Monitoring: Regular blood tests (Haemoglobin and Iron studies) are required every 2–4 weeks initially to adjust the dose.
• Swallowing: Swallow the 100mg tablet whole; do not crush or chew it.

1. Phosphate Binders/Antacids: Medications containing calcium, iron, or magnesium can interfere with absorption; take Desidustat at least 2 hours apart.
2. Statins: Desidustat may increase the levels of certain cholesterol medications in your blood; dose adjustments may be needed.
3. Other Anaemia Meds: Do not combine with injectable EPO treatments unless specifically directed by a specialist.

The starting dose is typically 100mg taken three times a week. Your doctor will adjust this dose (up or down) based on your blood haemoglobin levels, aiming for a target range of 10 to 12 g/dL.

An overdose can lead to an excessively high haemoglobin level (Polycythemia), which increases the risk of stroke or heart attack.
