Quick Summary

Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml is a three-component combination medicine containing bromhexine, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine, used for symptomatic relief of productive cough and nasal congestion associated with respiratory tract infections and bronchitis. Bromhexine is a mucolytic, which means it breaks down thick mucus, while guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps throw out loosened mucus, and phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that relieves stuffiness and sinus pressure. Together, they address productive cough and nasal obstruction in a single formulation.

Detailed Description

Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml is a mucolytic-expectorant-decongestant combination that is available in a fixed dose and created to provide relief from productive respiratory symptoms. Each component focuses on managing a different part of the respiratory symptoms, making the combination more convenient than taking separate medicines.

Bromhexine is a synthetic mucolytic derived from the Adhatoda vasica plant. It acts on bronchial secretory cells to break down the mucopolysaccharide fibres that make mucus thick and sticky, lowering viscosity and easing its movement up the airway. Guaifenesin is a centrally acting expectorant that increases the volume of respiratory tract secretions and lubricates the airway, improving mucociliary clearance and productive coughing. Phenylephrine is a direct-acting alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that narrows dilated (widened) nasal mucosal blood vessels, reducing tissue oedema (swelling due to fluid buildup) and relieving nasal and sinus congestion.

Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml is for short-term use only and must not be used for more than 7 consecutive days without a doctor's advice, as it cannot cure any underlying infection.

Uses of Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml

Acute and chronic bronchitis

Helps in thinning and expelling of thick mucus from the lower airways, resulting in reduced breathlessness and cough.

Productive cough

Promotes easier expectoration (coughing up and spitting out) of mucus in upper and lower respiratory tract infections.

Nasal congestion

Phenylephrine relieves stuffiness associated with cold, flu, and sinusitis.

Sinusitis

Reduces sinus pressure and promotes better drainage of blocked sinuses.

Benefits of Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml

  • A single formulation that helps in mucus thinning, expectoration, and nasal decongestion.
  • Bromhexine reduces mucus viscosity, making the airway less blocked and coughing more effective.
  • Guaifenesin increases mucus volume and promotes productive coughing to clear the airway.
  • Phenylephrine narrows blood vessels inside the nose for rapid relief of congestion and sinus pressure.
  • The onset of mucolytic and expectorant effects could be seen within 30 to 60 minutes, while the decongestant effect takes effect within 15 to 30 minutes.

Directions for Use

Available as oral syrup or tablets. Take with or after food to reduce gastric trouble. The standard adult dose for those aged 12 years and above could be 1 to 2 tablets or 10 mL syrup every 4 to 6 hours, not exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours. This dosage can vary depending on your age and other health-related factors.

Do not use Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml for more than 7 consecutive days without medical advice. Drink adequate fluids during treatment to aid the clearance of mucus. Do not use alongside other decongestant or cough medications without consulting your doctor.

How it works

Due to respiratory infections and airway inflammation, goblet cells (cells located in the airway) and submucosal glands (present in the tracheobronchial airway) secrete excessive mucus. Mucus is made up of two types of molecules: mucopolysaccharides (sugar-based molecules) and glycoproteins (protein-based molecules). When these molecules become heavily interlinked with each other, the mucus turns thick and sticky. This makes it harder for the tiny hair-like cilia in the airways to sweep the mucus out, and the body responds by triggering a cough to try to clear it.

Bromhexine is partially converted in the liver into another active substance called ambroxol. Together, both bromhexine and ambroxol encourage the glands in the airways to produce a thinner & watery fluid, and break the chemical bonds that hold the thick mucus structure together. This loosens and thins the mucus, making it less sticky so that the cilia in the airways can more easily sweep it upward and out.

Guaifenesin works by sending signals through the nerves connected to the airways, telling the airway lining cells to produce more fluid. This extra fluid mixes with and dilutes the already-loosened mucus, thus helping move the mucus faster toward the throat, where it can be coughed out.

Phenylephrine works by attaching to specific receptors on the blood vessels inside the lining of the nose. This causes the blood vessels to narrow, which reduces the amount of blood and fluid leaking into the surrounding tissue. As a result, the swollen nasal lining shrinks, the nasal passage widens, and breathing through the nose becomes easier. It also reduces swelling around the small openings of the sinuses, helping them drain more effectively.

Interactions with Other Drugs

MAO inhibitors

SEVERE

Phenylephrine combined with MAOIs (phenelzine & linezolid) can trigger a life-threatening acute hypertensive crisis. Do not use within 14 days of stopping an MAOI.

Beta-blockers

CAUTION

May heighten phenylephrine's blood vessel constriction effect, increasing the risk of severe hypertension.

Other sympathomimetics

CAUTION

Combined with phenylephrine, they can increase the risk of hypertension & tachycardia.

CNS depressants

CAUTION

Increased risk of sedation, causing drowsiness & a high risk of accidents.

Tricyclic antidepressants

CAUTION

Drug-Disease Interactions

  • Hypertension and cardiovascular disease: Phenylephrine raises blood pressure and can worsen hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and other cardiac conditions.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Phenylephrine's sympathomimetic effects (similar to fight or flight mode) may be exaggerated in people diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, increasing the risk of tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Diabetes mellitus: Phenylephrine can increase blood glucose levels because some liquid formulations also contain sugar. Check the product labels before use.
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma: Phenylephrine may raise intraocular pressure, worsening glaucoma.
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Phenylephrine may worsen urinary retention in people diagnosed with this condition.
  • Peptic ulcer disease: Guaifenesin may cause gastric irritation. Hence, people with peptic ulcers should use Deletus P Mixed Fruit Syrup 100ml with caution.

Overdose

Phenylephrine overdose may cause severe hypertension, intense headache, and reflex bradycardia (slower heart rate). Guaifenesin overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, and CNS depression in high doses. Bromhexine overdose may cause nausea and gastrointestinal disturbance. Therefore, if you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
