Uses

Trastuzumab is used in the treatment of breast cancer and stomach cancer.

How it Works

Trastuzumab is a recombinant IgG1 monoclonal antibody that targets the HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor) receptors, which are responsible for the over-proliferation of cancer cells in breast and stomach cancers. It destroys cancer cells by inhibiting HER2 and also disrupts various downstream signaling pathways associated with cancer progression.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Trastuzumab include chills, diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, back pain, vomiting, weakness, and breathlessness.

It is administered as an injection into your vein or under the skin, typically over a duration of 1 hour.
Use an effective contraception method to prevent pregnancy while taking this medicine and for 7 months after discontinuing treatment.
Your doctor will regularly monitor your heart while you are on this medication.

Breathlessness
Cough
Shivering
Swelling of legs and arms

Frequently asked questions

How long should Trastuzumab be taken?

Patients with early breast cancer should take Trastuzumab for 1 year or until disease recurrence, whichever comes first. Extension beyond 1 year is not recommended.

How frequently are heart investigations required?

Heart investigations should be conducted at the start of treatment, repeated every 3 months during treatment, and every 6 months for 24 months after stopping Trastuzumab. Patients with pre-existing heart issues may require investigations every 12 weeks.

What are the serious side effects of Trastuzumab?

Trastuzumab may cause serious side effects including sore throat, fever, chills, excessive fatigue, pale skin, nosebleeds, unusual bruising or bleeding, stomach pain, seizures, hallucinations, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, rapid heartbeat, and signs of infection. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Is fasting required before administering Trastuzumab?

Fasting is not required prior to Trastuzumab administration. It should be given by a healthcare professional experienced in cancer chemotherapy.

How long after Trastuzumab therapy can I get pregnant?

Women of child-bearing age should use effective contraception during Trastuzumab therapy and for 7 months after completing treatment. Pregnancy can be planned after this 7-month period.

Why has my doctor advised for investigations of heart?

Trastuzumab can adversely affect heart health, especially when used with anthracycline medications like doxorubicin. Your doctor will monitor your heart health before and during treatment.

Can Trastuzumab be given to HER2 negative cancer patients?

No, Trastuzumab is not effective for patients with HER2 negative cancer. It specifically targets the HER2 protein found in large amounts on HER2 positive cancer cells.

How is Trastuzumab given, intravenously or intramuscularly?

Trastuzumab is available in two formulations: one for intravenous infusion and the other for subcutaneous injection. Ensure the correct formulation is used as prescribed, as the intravenous formulation is not for subcutaneous use. Your doctor may consider switching between the two if appropriate.
