atom-spiralsSalt Composition:Lanolin 20gm

Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm is a topical emollient (skin softener) and occlusive moisturiser. It is often used for sore and cracked nipples in breastfeeding mothers, diaper rash, dry and chapped skin, chapped lips, radiation dermatitis, and minor skin irritation. Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm works by forming a breathable, semi-occlusive film on the skin that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), softens the stratum corneum (primary skin barrier), and protects from friction, wind, and chemical irritants.

Detailed Description

[Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm is a pharmaceutical-grade emolient that has a natural mixture of long-chain fatty acid esters, lanolin alcohols, sterols (including cholesterol), and other lipids. Chemically and physiologically, it closely mimics the lipids of human skin (vernix caseosa and sebum), making it highly effective as an emollient and barrier-repair agent. Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm does not contain pesticide residues and detergents, making it safer for sensitive use such as nipple care during breastfeeding.

It is available as ointments, creams, nipple creams, nasal sprays, ophthalmic lubricant ointments, and compound preparations with vitamin A, vitamin D, zinc oxide, and other ingredients. Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm is used both as an active ingredient and as a pharmaceutical excipient (inactive).

Unlike medicated creams containing steroids, antibiotics, or antifungals, Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm’s action is physical and supportive. It restores and protects the epidermal barrier while the underlying cause of damage is addressed. The systemic absorption of Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm is negligible; therefore, it is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and for people across all age groups, including infants.

Radiation-induced dermatitis

Soothes and protects irradiated skin during radiotherapy.

Minor skin injuries

Treats minor burns, abrasions, chafing, and windburn.

Ophthalmic lubricant

Benefits of Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm

  • Highly effective emollient and occlusive that helps reduce TEWL by 20 to 30% and makes the damaged skin supple again.
  • Chemically similar to human skin lipids, so it blends into the stratum corneum and supports barrier repair.
  • Safe for newborns and breastfeeding mothers. Highly purified, pharmaceutical-grade lanolin does not need to be wiped off before feeding.
  • Negligible systemic absorption, making it a very low risk in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Directions for Use

Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm is for topical use only. Ensure the area is clean and dry before application. For breastfeeding nipple care, apply a pea-sized amount to the entire nipple and areola after each feed. With highly purified products, there is no need to wash off before the next feed. If latch pain persists beyond 48 to 72 hours, seek professional help. For diaper rash, clean and fully dry the nappy area and apply with each change. Avoid heavily exudative or clearly infected rashes without medical advice. For dry lips, hands, heels, and cuticles, apply 2 to 4 times daily during flares. For ophthalmic ointments, follow the instructions as prescribed, but the ointment is applied inside the lower eyelid, typically at bedtime, after removing contact lenses. Do not apply to deep wounds, infected skin, or animal bites without medical review. Keep away from the eyes unless using an eye-specific formulation.

How it works

The outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum) is built like a brick wall, where dead skin cells are held together by a 'mortar' of natural fats (ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol, and cholesterol esters). This fatty matrix keeps water in, blocks irritants, and keeps the skin soft. When skin becomes dry, chapped, cracked, or inflamed, this matrix breaks down. This allows water to escape, resulting in stiffening of the skin and making it more vulnerable to damage.

Firstly, Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm, as an occlusive, forms a thin, flexible, semi-occlusive film that blocks water evaporation, reducing TEWL and allowing the skin's natural moisture reservoir to rise. Rehydrated corneocytes (dead cells that form the outermost layer of the skin) swell, close gaps between cells, and restore flexibility.

Secondly, as an emollient, Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gms long-chain esters, sterols (including cholesterol), and fatty alcohols are chemically similar to human skin lipids. They integrate into the intercellular lipid matrix, effectively patching the damaged mortar between corneocytes, strengthening the barrier and smoothing the surface.

Third, by softening and sealing the surface, Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm reduces mechanical friction, allowing the epidermis to repair itself.

Finally, due to lanolin alcohol content, Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm can absorb and hold up to twice its weight in water, allowing it to act as an occlusive as well as a mild humectant.

Topical antibiotics / antifungals
MILD

Apply the medicated product first and allow it to absorb before using Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm.

Topical retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene)
CAUTION

Occlusion can increase retinoid potency and irritation. Separate applications or avoid combining.

Other topical emollients / ointments
MILD

Multiple heavy occlusives on the same site may over-saturate skin and promote irritation or folliculitis.

Ophthalmic medications (drops)
CAUTION

Instil drops first and wait 30 minutes before applying Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm.

Drug-Disease Interactions

  • Known lanolin / wool alcohol allergy (AVOID): It can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis.
  • Skin infection (AVOID): Avoid thick occlusive application without treating the underlying infection.
  • Chronic ulcers and deep wounds (CAUTION): It does not heal wounds; hence, it must only be used when prescribed.
  • Acne vulgaris / rosacea (AVOID): It can aggravate comedones and facial flares.
  • Severe atopic dermatitis with lanolin sensitisation (CAUTION): Avoid or do a patch test first.

Overdose

Overdosing is extremely unlikely with topical medication as absorption is minimal through an intact skin. However, excessive application may macerate the skin or clog pores. These symptoms usually resolve with discontinuation and gentle cleansing. Ingestion in small amounts is generally not dangerous but may cause mild nausea or loose stools. In case of large ingestions, seek immediate medical help.

What If You Forget to take Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm?

Nipcare Modified Lanolin Cream 20gm is typically used as needed rather than on a fixed schedule. If you miss an application, simply apply the next dose when you remember or when the skin feels dry. For regular regimens (after each feed or diaper change), resume the usual routine at the next opportunity without doubling up.
