More About Olment 5mg Tablet

Detailed Description

Olment 5mg Tablet is a dibenzoxepine derivative that works as a dual-action antiallergic agent. It is available as ophthalmic eye drops, intranasal spray, and oral tablets. The combination of H1 antagonism and mast cell stabilisation makes it effective for both acute symptoms and long-term prevention.

It differs from older antihistamines because it has minimal central nervous system penetration, causing far less sedation than first-generation agents like chlorpheniramine. It blocks H1 receptors and stabilises mast cells to prevent the release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other inflammatory mediators.

Ophthalmic formulation of olopatadine is widely used for seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis. The intranasal spray is approved for seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children aged 6 years and older. The oral form may also be used for chronic urticaria (hives) and atopic dermatitis, however, only under medical supervision.

Uses of Olment 5mg Tablet

  • Allergic conjunctivitis: Itching, redness, watering, and burning of the eyes due to seasonal or perennial allergies.
  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis: Sneezing, runny nose, and nasal itching (intranasal spray).
  • Chronic urticaria: Itchy hives and skin rashes (oral form).
  • Atopic dermatitis: Allergic skin inflammation, particularly in some Asian countries (oral form).
  • Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: Severe seasonal eye allergy in children and young adults.

Benefits of Olment 5mg Tablet

  • Blocks histamine and stabilises mast cells, providing rapid relief and long-term prevention.
  • Highly selective for H1 receptors, with minimal sedation and minimal anticholinergic side effects.
  • Effective within minutes for ocular itching after instillation.
  • Suitable for children (eye drops from age 3, nasal spray from age 6).
  • Does not cause rebound congestion, unlike decongestant nasal sprays.

Directions for Use

You must use Olment 5mg Tablet exactly as prescribed by the doctor or as directed on the package. For using eye drops, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, instil one drop into the affected eye, and close the eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes. Always remember to wash your hands before and after use. Do not touch the tip of the dropper tip the eye, or any surface, to prevent contamination. Remember to remove contact lenses before using Olment 5mg Tablet and wait at least 10 minutes before reinserting them. For the nasal spray, prime (shake the bottle and spray in the air) before first use. The usual nasal dose for adults is twice daily. Oral tablets can be taken with or without food. However, one must not exceed the prescribed dose. If symptoms do not improve within a few days, consult a doctor.

How it works

Allergic reactions in our body occur when the immune system reacts to foreign substances such as pollen, dust mites, or animal dander. On exposure, mast cells (immune cells) in the eyes, nose, skin, and airways release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals (leukotrienes, prostaglandins, cytokines), which result in symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, sneezing, and watery discharge.

Olment 5mg Tablet works against allergic reactions in two ways. First, it acts as a selective antagonist of the histamine H1 receptor, blocking the action of histamine on target cells in the eyes, nose, and skin. This action helps prevent itching, vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), and increased vascular permeability. As Olment 5mg Tablet is highly selective for H1 receptors and does not cross the blood-brain barrier easily, it produces minimal sedation compared with first-generation antihistamines.

Second, Olment 5mg Tablet stabilises mast cells, preventing them from degranulating and releasing histamine and other inflammatory mediators in response to allergens. This mast cell-stabilising action makes it useful as a preventive treatment when used regularly during allergy seasons. Olment 5mg Tablet also inhibits the release of leukotrienes and tachykinins from sensory nerves and reduces eosinophil infiltration into inflamed tissues.

Limited information

Eye drops are generally safe from age 3 & nasal spray from age 6.

Drug-Food Interaction

  • Food (NIL): Oral form can be taken with or without food.
  • Alcohol (MILD): May increase mild sedation with the oral form. Topical and nasal forms are not affected.
  • Caffeine (NIL): No clinically significant interaction.

Interactions with Other Drugs

Other antihistamines (oral or topical)
MODERATE

Additional antihistamine effects. Do not combine until prescribed.

CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives, opioids)
MODERATE

Additional sedation, mainly with the oral form.

Anticholinergic drugs

MILD

Slight additional anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision) with the oral form.

MAO inhibitors

CAUTION

Theoretical interaction with the oral form; consult prescriber.

Other ophthalmic drops

CAUTION

Separate instillation by at least 5 minutes to avoid washout.

Drug-Disease Interactions

  • Renal impairment (CAUTION): While there is limited systemic absorption from topical forms, the oral formulation may need dose review.
  • Glaucoma (CAUTION): Even though eye drops are safe in glaucoma, you must consult with your doctor before regular use.
  • Pre-existing eye infections (AVOID): Avoid eye drops during active bacterial or viral conjunctivitis unless prescribed.

Overdose

It is very unusual to overdose with topical or nasal formulations as they are very less likely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Accidental ingestion of large amounts of the oral form may cause drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, tachycardia (rapid heart rate), and rarely QT prolongation. The overdose management may include monitoring cardiovascular and neurological status, using activated charcoal for recent ingestion, and symptomatic care. You must seek immediate emergency care if a child accidentally swallows eye drops or large quantities of the oral medicine.

What If You Forget to take Olment 5mg Tablet?

Take a missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time of the next dose. In this case, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double-dose. Missing an occasional dose of eye drops or nasal spray is unlikely to cause significant problems. Consistent daily use is more important when Olment 5mg Tablet is used preventively during allergy season.
