Loppa 2mg Tablet 10s is an antidiarrheal medication used to control and relieve the symptoms of acute, non-specific diarrhea. It is also used to manage chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease. This medicine works by slowing down the rhythm of the digestive system, allowing the intestines more time to absorb fluids and salts, which results in firmer stools and less frequent bowel movements.

Loppa 2mg Tablet 10s is indicated for the control and symptomatic relief of acute non-specific diarrhea and chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease. It is also used to reduce the volume of discharge from ileostomies.

• Mechanism in the Gut: Loperamide is a synthetic oral antidiarrheal agent. It binds to the opiate receptors in the gut wall, inhibiting the release of acetylcholine and prostaglandins. This reduces peristalsis (the wave-like muscle contractions of the intestine) and increases the transit time of the intestinal contents.

• Fluid Absorption: By slowing down the movement of food and waste through the digestive tract, loperamide allows the body more time to absorb water and electrolytes from the stool. This effectively thickens the stool and reduces the frequency of bowel movements.

• Sphincter Tone: Loperamide also increases the tone of the anal sphincter, which helps reduce fecal incontinence and urgency.

Loperamide mainly acts in the gut and usually does not affect the brain or cause typical opioid effects when taken as directed. It is meant to treat the symptoms of diarrhea, not the underlying cause, so staying hydrated and addressing the reason for diarrhea is still important.

This medicine is used to treat:

• Acute, sudden diarrhea (including traveler's diarrhea)

Common Side Effects:

• Constipation

Uncommon Side Effects:

• Dry mouth

• Bloating or mild gas

Take Loppa 2mg Tablet 10s exactly as prescribed by your doctor or according to the package directions. Do not take more than the recommended amount.

• Take this medicine with a full glass of water.

• For acute diarrhea, the first dose is usually taken immediately after the first loose stool. Follow up with a dose after each subsequent loose stool, up to the maximum recommended daily limit.

• Drink plenty of clear fluids (water, broth, or electrolyte solutions) throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

• Do not give this medicine to children under 2 years of age due to the risk of severe breathing and heart problems.

• Diarrhea can cause your body to lose vital fluids and salts. Be sure to drink plenty of water and oral rehydration solutions to stay hydrated.

• Do not take this medicine if your diarrhea is accompanied by a high fever or if you notice blood or mucus in your stools; these may be signs of a bacterial infection that requires different treatment.

• Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within 48 hours.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children.

• Alcohol: May increase drowsiness and impair mental alertness.
• Tonic Water: Contains quinine, which may interact with loperamide and increase the risk of heart rhythm issues.

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:

• Clarithromycin or erythromycin

• Ritonavir

• Quinidine

• Gemfibrozil

• Itraconazole or ketoconazole

This medicine should be used with caution, or avoided, if you have:

• Dysentery (diarrhea with blood and high fever)

• Acute ulcerative colitis

• Bacterial enterocolitis (caused by organisms like Salmonella, Shigella, or Campylobacter)

• Pseudomembranous colitis associated with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics

• Liver disease

Your dose will be determined by your doctor or the instructions on the package based on your age and the severity of the diarrhea. Do not exceed 8mg per day for over-the-counter use, or 16mg per day if under a doctor's supervision.

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line immediately. Symptoms of a loperamide overdose may include severe constipation, stomach pain or bloating, a slow or irregular heartbeat, or feeling very drowsy with slow, shallow breathing.

If you are taking loperamide on a schedule and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.
