Glencoff Dx Syrup 100ml is a prescription combination medicine containing two active ingredients: Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Dextromethorphan. Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine that relieves allergy-driven symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes by blocking histamine receptors. Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting antitussive (cough suppressant) that reduces the urge to cough by acting on the cough centre in the brain. Together, they provide targeted relief for cough and upper respiratory symptoms associated with the common cold, allergic rhinitis, and other respiratory conditions. It should always be taken under medical guidance, with dose and duration tailored to each patient's needs.
Glencoff Dx Syrup 100ml contains two active ingredients: Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, each contributing a specific therapeutic action in cough and cold management.
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is a first-generation antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is the chemical messenger responsible for sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itching, and excess mucus during allergic reactions. By preventing histamine from binding to its receptors, Chlorpheniramine helps dry nasal secretions, reduce irritation, and ease allergy-related discomfort. Because it can act on the brain, it may also cause mild drowsiness, which sometimes helps patients rest more comfortably when symptoms interfere with sleep.
Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide complements this action as a non-opioid cough suppressant. It acts centrally by elevating the threshold for coughing in the medulla oblongata of the brain. Unlike productive coughs that help clear the lungs, the dry, hacking cough associated with many viral infections can irritate the airway further and interfere with rest. Dextromethorphan interrupts this reflex, providing the respiratory system with the necessary reprieve to facilitate healing.
Together, these active ingredients are absorbed rapidly into the systemic circulation, typically providing symptomatic relief within 30 minutes of administration. Chlorpheniramine is metabolised in the liver and excreted through the kidneys, while Dextromethorphan is also metabolised in the liver, and eliminated in urine. When taken as directed, Glencoff Dx Syrup 100ml helps reduce coughing episodes, ease allergy-driven nasal and eye symptoms, and support more comfortable breathing and rest during short-term respiratory illness.
Symptomatic relief of non-productive (dry) cough caused by the common cold, flu, or upper respiratory tract infections.
Management of concurrent allergic symptoms and cough in patients with seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis.
Relief of cough triggered by post-nasal drip associated with allergic or infective rhinitis, where both antihistamine and antitussive coverage is beneficial.
Multi-symptom relief including sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching, watery eyes, and dry irritating cough.
Glencoff Dx Syrup 100ml may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most reactions are mild and temporary, but some can be more significant and require medical attention.
Take Glencoff Dx Syrup 100ml only as directed, never more than prescribed, and check with your doctor before combining it with other medicines. If your symptoms don’t improve, seek medical advice rather than continuing on your own.
Both components should be used with caution during pregnancy. The safety of Dextromethorphan and Chlorpheniramine in pregnancy has not been fully established. Use only when clearly necessary and under direct medical supervision.
Chlorpheniramine may pass into breast milk and may cause sedation or irritability in the nursing infant. Dextromethorphan use during breastfeeding also requires medical assessment. Seek guidance before use.
Chlorpheniramine may cause significant drowsiness and impair alertness and reaction time. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery during treatment until you know how this medicine affects you.
Both components undergo hepatic metabolism. Patients with significant liver impairment may experience reduced drug clearance and an increased risk of side effects. Medical assessment is required before use.
Use with caution in patients with significant renal impairment, as metabolites of both components are renally excreted.
Alcohol significantly enhances the sedative effects of Chlorpheniramine and the CNS depressant effects of Dextromethorphan, increasing the risk of excessive drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Alcohol must be avoided during treatment.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time. Since Glencoff Dx Syrup 100ml is typically used for short-term symptomatic relief, missing a dose may simply mean a temporary return of symptoms. If symptoms are difficult to manage, consult your healthcare provider.
