Enizahex 25 Tablet contains Tetrabenazine, a medication used to treat chorea (involuntary, jerky, or irregular movements) associated with Huntington’s disease. It belongs to a group of medicines known as monoamine depleters. By regulating the amount of certain natural substances in the brain that control muscle movement, Enizahex 25 Tablet helps reduce the frequency and severity of involuntary movements, allowing for better physical coordination and daily functioning.
Enizahex 25 Tablet is a prescription medication used to manage hyperkinetic movement disorders. It is primarily used for the symptoms of Huntington’s Disease, a neurological condition characterized by the progressive loss of motor control. Chorea, the most visible symptom, involves abrupt, purposeless movements caused by an oversensitivity or overabundance of dopamine in the brain's motor centers.
Tetrabenazine acts as a high-affinity, reversible inhibitor of the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2). In simple terms, it prevents the storage of neurotransmitters (primarily dopamine, but also serotonin and norepinephrine) within the vesicles of nerve cells. When these chemicals are not stored, they are broken down, leading to a depletion of dopamine at the nerve endings. This reduction in dopamine signaling "quiets" the overactive motor pathways in the brain that trigger involuntary jerking.
Enizahex 25 Tablet is extensively metabolized in the liver into its active metabolites (alpha- and beta-dihydrotetrabenazine). Due to its potent effect on brain chemistry, the dose is typically started very low and increased slowly to find the optimal balance between movement control and side effects.
Reduction of involuntary, dance-like movements.
In some cases, used off-label to manage repetitive movements caused by long-term use of certain psychiatric drugs.
Occasionally used for the management of severe motor and vocal tics when other treatments fail.
Significantly reduces the intensity of jerky, irregular movements.
Helps patients perform routine tasks like eating or dressing more easily by increasing motor control.
Unlike some older neuroleptics, it does not carry the same high risk of causing permanent movement disorders (tardive dyskinesia).
The gradual titration process allows for a personalized treatment plan based on the patient's unique sensitivity.
Because this medicine lowers levels of mood-regulating chemicals like serotonin, psychological side effects are common and require close monitoring.
Enizahex 25 Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your neurologist. It is generally taken one to three times daily. The medication can be taken with or without food. To minimize the risk of side effects, your doctor will start with a low dose and increase it weekly. Do not stop taking this medication suddenly, as your movement symptoms may return quickly and severely. If you miss multiple doses, consult your doctor before restarting.
Use only if the potential benefit justifies the risk; there are no adequate studies in pregnant women.
It is unknown if the drug passes into milk; breastfeeding is generally not recommended during treatment.
This medicine often causes significant sedation or drowsiness; do not drive until you know how it affects you.
Enizahex 25 Tablet is contraindicated (not to be used) in patients with hepatic impairment.
Use with caution as limited data exists on use in patients with renal disease.
Alcohol can severely increase the sedative effects of this medication and should be avoided.
Patients and caregivers must monitor for signs of depression, agitation, or suicidal thoughts daily.
If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at once. If you miss more than two days of treatment, contact your doctor, as your dose may need to be adjusted or restarted from the beginning.
