Carkozom 10 Tablet

atom-spiralsSalt Composition:Carbimazole 10mg

Carkozom 10 Tablet contains carbimazole and is used to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), a condition in which the thyroid gland produces excessive thyroid hormones. Excess thyroid hormone can speed up metabolism and cause symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, weight loss, sweating, tremors, anxiety, and heat intolerance. Carbimazole works by reducing the production of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. Carkozom 10 Tablet may be used as initial treatment, long-term therapy, or before radioactive iodine treatment or thyroid surgery, depending on clinical needs.

Detailed Description

Carkozom 10 Tablet contains carbimazole, an antithyroid medicine used to manage conditions associated with excessive thyroid hormone production, particularly Graves’ disease and other causes of hyperthyroidism. It belongs to the thionamide class of medicines and acts by reducing the synthesis of thyroid hormones, helping restore hormonal balance.

Carbimazole itself is converted in the body to methimazole, its active form. Methimazole blocks thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme required for the iodination of tyrosine residues and coupling reactions involved in thyroid hormone production. As a result, the formation of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) is reduced.

Carkozom 10 Tablet is commonly prescribed in adults and children with hyperthyroidism and is often used to prepare patients before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy by stabilising thyroid hormone levels. It may also be used for long-term disease control in selected patients.

The medicine does not produce immediate symptom relief because stored thyroid hormone in the body must first be depleted. Clinical improvement usually begins within 1 to 3 weeks, while full control may take 4 to 8 weeks depending on severity and dosage.

Carbimazole is metabolised in the liver and eliminated mainly through the kidneys. Regular blood tests are important during treatment to monitor thyroid function, liver function, and blood cell counts. When used appropriately under medical supervision, Carkozom 10 Tablet is an effective long-term treatment for controlling overactive thyroid activity.

Uses of Carkozom 10 Tablet

Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

Primarily used to treat hyperthyroidism by reducing excessive thyroid hormone production and helping restore normal thyroid balance.

Graves’ Disease

Commonly prescribed in Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition in which the thyroid gland becomes overactive and produces excess hormones.

Preoperative Thyroid Stabilisation

Used before thyroid surgery to bring thyroid hormone levels under control and reduce the risk of complications during and after the procedure.

Preparation Before Radioactive Iodine Therapy

Given prior to radioactive iodine treatment to stabilise thyroid activity and improve treatment safety.

Long-Term Thyroid Control

In selected patients, Carbimazole may be used as long-term medical therapy to maintain normal thyroid hormone levels and avoid recurrence.

Benefits of Carkozom 10 Tablet

  • Effectively Lowers Excess Thyroid Hormone Production: Carbimazole directly reduces the synthesis of thyroid hormones, helping correct hormone imbalance at its source.
  • Relieves Symptoms of Overactive Thyroid: Helps improve common hyperthyroid symptoms such as palpitations, tremors, sweating, irritability, heat intolerance, and unexplained weight loss.
  • Supports Heart Protection: By controlling thyroid hormone excess, it reduces strain on the heart and lowers the risk of fast heart rate, arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular complications.
  • Improves Metabolic Stability: Helps restore normal metabolism, energy balance, and body function affected by excessive thyroid hormone levels.
  • Useful Before Definitive Thyroid Treatment: Provides safer hormone control before surgery or radioactive iodine therapy.
  • May Prevent Disease Progression: Regular treatment can reduce the risk of worsening hyperthyroidism and thyroid-related complications.
  • Flexible for Short-Term or Long-Term Management: Depending on clinical response, Carbimazole may be used temporarily or as part of extended thyroid disease management.
  • Improves Quality of Life: As thyroid levels normalise, patients often experience better sleep, reduced anxiety, improved concentration, and overall wellbeing.

Side Effects of Carkozom 10 Tablet

When taken as directed, Carkozom 10 Tablet is generally effective, but side effects may occur and require monitoring.

Common Side Effects
  • Skin Rash or Itching: Mild allergic skin reactions may occur.
  • Nausea or Stomach Upset: Mild digestive discomfort can occur early in treatment.
  • Joint Pain: Some patients report mild muscle or joint discomfort.
Uncommon Side Effects
  • Hair Thinning: Temporary hair shedding may occur in some patients.
  • Headache: Mild headaches may occur during treatment.
  • Taste Disturbance: Rare changes in taste perception may develop.
Serious Side Effects (Require Immediate Medical Attention)
  • Agranulocytosis: Severe reduction in white blood cells causing fever, sore throat, or infection.
  • Liver Injury: Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, or abdominal pain.
  • Severe Allergic Reactions: Swelling of face, rash, or difficulty breathing.

Directions for Use

Carkozom 10 Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician. The dose depends on thyroid hormone levels and clinical response. It is often started in divided doses and later reduced once control is achieved. Tablets may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Regular blood tests are necessary during treatment.

How it works

The mechanism of Carkozom 10 Tablet is based on its ability to reduce the production of thyroid hormones within the thyroid gland. Carbimazole itself is a prodrug, which means it is converted in the body into its active form, methimazole, after absorption.

Methimazole acts by inhibiting thyroid peroxidase, an essential enzyme involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. This enzyme normally helps oxidise iodine and attach it to tyrosine residues within thyroglobulin, a key step required for the formation of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

By blocking this enzyme, Carkozom 10 Tablet prevents iodine from being incorporated into thyroid hormone precursors and inhibits the coupling reactions needed to produce active thyroid hormones. As a result, the thyroid gland gradually releases lower amounts of T3 and T4, helping hormone levels return to normal.

Because Carbimazole does not affect thyroid hormones that have already been formed and stored in the gland, improvement in symptoms is usually gradual rather than immediate. Clinical benefits generally begin to appear after one to three weeks of regular treatment, with fuller control developing over several weeks depending on the severity of hyperthyroidism.
