How it Works
How Gabapentin works Gabapentin is an antiepileptic medication. When prescribed for epilepsy, it is believed to reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain, thereby preventing seizures. Additionally, it is used to treat nerve pain by blocking pain signals traveling through damaged nerves to the brain.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Gabapentin include dizziness, fatigue, fever, sleepiness, viral infection, decreased white blood cell count, pneumonia, respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, otitis media (ear infection), decreased appetite, increased appetite, abnormal voluntary movements, visual disturbances, vertigo, facial swelling, joint pain, muscle pain, and impotence.
Expert Advice
- Take Gabapentin at the same time every day, preferably at bedtime, to minimize dizziness or drowsiness during the day.
- Avoid taking antacids 2 hours before or after taking Gabapentin, as they can hinder the absorption of the medication.
- Gabapentin may cause sleepiness; do not drive or engage in activities requiring concentration until you understand how it affects you.
- Inform your doctor if you experience any unusual changes in mood or behavior, new or worsening depression, or suicidal thoughts or behavior.
- Do not abruptly stop taking Gabapentin without consulting your doctor, as this may increase the frequency of seizures.
- You have been prescribed Gabapentin for the treatment and prevention of nerve pain caused by diabetes and shingles.
- Gabapentin may also be used for the treatment and prevention of seizures.
- Take Gabapentin only as per the dose and duration prescribed by your doctor.
- Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Gabapentin, as it may lead to excessive sleepiness or drowsiness.
- Gabapentin may cause blurring or loss of vision; inform your doctor immediately if you notice any changes in your vision.
