How Empagliflozin Works Empagliflozin is an anti-diabetic medication that helps remove excess sugar from the body through urine.

Common side effects of Empagliflozin include nausea, increased thirst, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), urinary tract infection, vomiting, constipation, polyuria, and genital fungal infection.

Expert Advice

  • Empagliflozin is used alone or in combination with other diabetes medicines to control blood sugar and prevent long-term complications.
  • It may cause your body to lose too much fluid (dehydration) or increase urination frequency. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) may occur when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or if you delay or miss a meal.
  • Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice to counteract hypoglycemia symptoms such as cold sweats, cool pale skin, tremors, and anxiety.
  • It can lead to genital fungal and/or urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both females and males; therefore, practice good hygiene.
  • Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels while taking this medicine.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you experience persistent dizziness, joint pain, cold-like symptoms, or unexplained nausea/vomiting.
  • Empagliflozin also reduces the risk of heart attack, heart failure, or other cardiovascular events.
  • Continue to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, and take any other prescribed diabetes medicines alongside Empagliflozin.
  • Empagliflozin may assist in weight loss and lowering blood pressure.
