Benzalkonium Chloride functions as a preservative and helps extend the shelf life of medications.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Benzalkonium Chloride include allergic contact dermatitis, apprehension, breathlessness, collapse, convulsions, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin), muscle weakness, paralysis of respiratory muscles, restlessness, and vomiting.
Expert Advice
- Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose; rinse immediately with plenty of cool tap water in case of accidental contact.
- Do not use benzalkonium chloride solution on blistered or cut skin.
- Consult your doctor before using benzalkonium chloride solution in children younger than 2 years.
- Inform your doctor if symptoms do not resolve after 7 days of use.
- Notify your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
- Should not be administered to patients who are allergic to benzalkonium chloride or any of its components.
- Should not be given to patients with deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
