Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) is a prescription tablet that combines aceclofenac (100 mg) and paracetamol (325 mg or 500 mg). Paracetamol is also called acetaminophen in some countries. Aceclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It lowers pain and swelling. Paracetamol lowers pain and fever. Doctors usually prescribe Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) for joint and muscle pain. This includes pain from osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune disease that causes painful, swollen joints) and ankylosing spondylitis (long-lasting inflammation of the spine). It is also used for back pain, sprains, toothache and pain after minor surgery or injury. It is meant for short-term relief of pain, stiffness and swelling.
Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) combines two pain relievers that work in different ways. This makes it useful for pain that comes with swelling and inflammation.
Aceclofenac belongs to the NSAID group. When you have an injury or an inflamed joint, your body makes chemical messengers called prostaglandins in that area. These messengers cause pain, redness, heat and swelling. Aceclofenac blocks the enzymes that make prostaglandins, so swelling and tenderness go down. Aceclofenac is closely related to diclofenac, and the body turns some of it into diclofenac.
Paracetamol works mainly in the brain and spinal cord. It changes the way the body senses pain, and it brings down a high temperature. It does very little for swelling. At normal doses it is gentle on the stomach.
Together, the two ingredients cover pain, swelling and fever. That is why Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) is often prescribed for:
Having both medicines in one tablet means fewer pills to take. It also means you must not take any other paracetamol product at the same time. Too much paracetamol can seriously damage the liver.
Like other NSAIDs, aceclofenac can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding. It can also affect the kidneys and raise blood pressure. It can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. This risk may appear early in treatment and increases with higher doses and longer use. People with heart failure, heart disease, poor circulation in the legs or a past stroke should not take it. For these reasons, Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) should only be used under a doctor's supervision, at the lowest dose that works and for the shortest time needed. Tell your doctor about any stomach, heart, kidney or liver problems before you start.
Not everyone gets side effects, and many people take Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) without any problems. Mild side effects often get better as your body gets used to the medicine.
Common Side Effects (Usually Mild and may lessen with continued use)
Serious Side Effects (Seek Urgent Medical Attention)
Aceclofenac: When tissue is injured or inflamed, the body uses enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX) to make prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemical messengers that make nerves more sensitive to pain and cause swelling and heat. This enzyme comes in two main forms, COX-1 and COX-2. Aceclofenac blocks COX but works more on COX-2, the form that is most active where there is inflammation. With fewer prostaglandins, pain signals become weaker and swelling settles. The body turns some aceclofenac into diclofenac, which also blocks COX. Prostaglandins made by COX-1 help protect the stomach lining, and prostaglandins from both COX-1 and COX-2 help keep blood flowing to the kidneys. That is why blocking them can cause stomach and kidney side effects, even with medicines that work more on COX-2.
Paracetamol: Paracetamol has only a weak effect on COX in swollen tissues, so it does little for inflammation. It acts mainly in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). There it raises the pain threshold, which means a stronger pain signal is needed before you feel pain. It also acts on the part of the brain that controls body temperature, which brings a fever down.
Working together: Aceclofenac reduces the inflammation that causes the pain, and paracetamol dulls how the brain senses that pain. The two act in different places, so together they can give fuller relief for painful, swollen conditions.
Do not take Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) in the last three months of pregnancy. Aceclofenac can harm the baby's heart and kidneys and affect labour. Avoid it from 20 weeks of pregnancy onwards, because NSAIDs can reduce the fluid around the baby. Earlier in pregnancy, use it only if your doctor decides it is clearly needed. Paracetamol on its own is usually the first choice for pain relief in pregnancy. Speak to your doctor before taking it if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy.
Paracetamol passes into breast milk only in small amounts. Little is known about aceclofenac and breast milk. Ask your doctor before using Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) while breastfeeding.
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol with paracetamol raises the risk of liver damage, and alcohol with an NSAID raises the risk of stomach bleeding.
Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) can cause dizziness, drowsiness, a spinning feeling or blurred vision in some people. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are affected.
Use with caution. NSAIDs can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and make kidney disease worse. People with severe kidney disease must not take it. Your doctor may check your kidney function.
Use with caution. Both ingredients are processed by the liver, and paracetamol can harm the liver at high doses. People with severe liver disease must not take it. If you have mild to moderate liver disease, your doctor may lower the dose and check your liver tests.
Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) is meant for adults. Aceclofenac is not recommended for children and teenagers under 18 years.
Older adults, especially those over 65, are more likely to get stomach bleeding, kidney problems and heart side effects from NSAIDs. The doctor will usually choose the lowest dose for the shortest time and may check on you more often.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every medicine, supplement and herbal product you use. Important interactions include:
An overdose of Aceclofenac + Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) is a medical emergency, even if you feel well.
What to do: Go to the nearest emergency department straight away, or call emergency services. Take the medicine strip or box with you. Do not wait for symptoms to appear, and do not try to make the person vomit unless a medical professional tells you to.
