Vandetanib is used in the treatment of thyroid cancer.

How it Works

Vandetanib works by inhibiting the action of an abnormal protein that stimulates the multiplication of cancer cells, thereby slowing or stopping their spread.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Vandetanib include gastrointestinal disturbances, skin and cutaneous disorders, high blood pressure, prolonged QT interval, decreased calcium levels in the blood, decreased appetite, protein in urine, decreased levels of thyroid hormones, and muscle spasms.

Expert Advice

  • Vandetanib can cause a change in the electrical activity of your heart known as QT prolongation, which may result in irregular heartbeats and potentially lead to death.
  • You should not take Vandetanib if you have a condition called long QT syndrome that you have had since birth.
  • Your doctor may perform tests to check the levels of:
    • Blood potassium
    • Calcium
    • Magnesium
    • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
  • Additionally, your doctor may assess the electrical activity of your heart using a test called an electrocardiogram (ECG).
  • Limit exposure to the sun, as Vandetanib can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Vandetanib may also cause a serious breathing problem known as interstitial lung disease, which can be fatal.
  • Notify your doctor immediately if you experience sudden or worsening shortness of breath or cough.
