How Trientine Hydrochloride works Trientine Hydrochloride is a copper chelating agent. It functions by binding excess copper in body tissues and transporting it to the kidneys, where it is ultimately excreted through urine.

Trientine Hydrochloride treats Wilson’s disease by removing excess copper from the body.
Take it on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals.
Swallow the medication whole with water; do not crush or chew it.
Take it at least one hour apart from any other medication.
Monitor your temperature every night for the first month of treatment.
Inform your doctor if you notice symptoms such as fever or skin eruptions.
Your doctor may regularly monitor your blood iron levels to check for iron deficiency.
