How Trientine Hydrochloride works Trientine Hydrochloride is a copper chelating agent. It functions by binding excess copper in body tissues and transporting it to the kidneys, where it is ultimately excreted through urine.

  • Trientine Hydrochloride treats Wilson’s disease by removing excess copper from the body.
  • Take it on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals.
  • Swallow the medication whole with water; do not crush or chew it.
  • Take it at least one hour apart from any other medication.
  • Monitor your temperature every night for the first month of treatment.
