How Trientine Hydrochloride works Trientine Hydrochloride is a copper chelating agent. It functions by binding excess copper in body tissues and transporting it to the kidneys, where it is ultimately excreted through urine.
Expert Advice
- Trientine Hydrochloride treats Wilson’s disease by removing excess copper from the body.
- Take it on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals.
- Swallow the medication whole with water; do not crush or chew it.
- Take it at least one hour apart from any other medication.
- Monitor your temperature every night for the first month of treatment.
- Inform your doctor if you notice symptoms such as fever or skin eruptions.
- Your doctor may regularly monitor your blood iron levels to check for iron deficiency.
