Sorbitol is used to treat constipation and to prepare the intestines before surgery.

How it Works

Sorbitol works by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis, which softens the stool and makes it easier to pass.

  • Sorbitol is utilized for the treatment of constipation.
  • Healthy tips to prevent constipation include:
    • Eat more fiber in your diet; the recommended daily intake is 20-35g.
    • Drink 8-10 glasses of water per day.
    • Exercise regularly, at least 3 times per week.
    • Avoid holding in stool, as this can worsen bowel issues.
  • Take sorbitol at least 2 hours after taking other medications, as it may interfere with their absorption.
  • It is advisable to take sorbitol preferably at bedtime, as it requires 6 to 8 hours to show effect.
  • Sorbitol is usually taken once a day as needed for up to 2 weeks.
  • Take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of stomach disorders, such as appendicitis or a blockage in your bowel.
