Somatostatin is used in the treatment of acromegaly, carcinoid tumors, and bleeding esophageal varices.
How it Works
How Somatostatin works Somatostatin functions by inhibiting the effects of specific natural hormones in the body, including serotonin and growth hormone. Additionally, it reduces bleeding from the esophagus by constricting the blood vessels.

Common side effects of somatostatin include diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, headache, increased blood glucose levels, injection site reactions, and gallstones.

- Somatostatin is used to treat acromegaly and certain hormone-producing tumors of the stomach, liver, and pancreas.
- It is administered as an injection either under the skin or into a vein.
- Temporary pain may occur at the injection site; this can be alleviated by gently rubbing the area for a few seconds afterward.
