Salmeterol

Uses

Salmeterol is used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

How it Works

How Salmeterol works Salmeterol is a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and widening the airways. This makes breathing easier.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Salmeterol include tremors, headache, palpitations, muscle cramps, vomiting, nausea, cough, upper respiratory tract infection, fungal infection of the mouth, pharyngitis, bronchitis (inflammation of the airways), voice changes, and pneumonia.

Expert Advice

  • This medicine is for inhalation only. The tablet should not be swallowed.
  • Salmeterol should be taken at the same time each day.
  • Take the first dose of this medicine under medical supervision, as it may cause wheezing or tightening of the airways (bronchospasm) immediately after use.
  • It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems.
  • Use your rescue inhaler to manage sudden difficulty in breathing.
  • Gargle with warm water after each inhalation to prevent any fungal infections in your mouth and throat.
  • Dry mouth may occur as a side effect. Frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene, increased water intake, and sugarless candy may help alleviate this.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Salmeterol is licensed for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Salmeterol is not fast-acting and is not suitable for relieving an ongoing asthma attack; it is used for prevention. A doctor may prescribe a shorter-acting bronchodilator for immediate relief during an attack.
Salmeterol is a long-acting beta agonist (LABA) that relaxes and opens air passages in the lungs, facilitating easier breathing. It is not a steroid, though it can be combined with steroids in inhalers. It is not a beta blocker.
Salmeterol (Seretide) is not known to cause stunted growth, hoarseness, increased blood pressure, or weight gain. If you experience any of these side effects, consult your doctor.
Salmeterol (found in Seretide and Esiflo 250) is different from salbutamol (also known as albuterol or Ventolin). Advair is a brand name for the combination of salmeterol and fluticasone.
