How Recombinant Human Erythropoietin Beta Works Recombinant Human Erythropoietin Beta belongs to a class of medicines known as erythropoietin-stimulating agents (ESAs). These medications function by stimulating the production of red blood cells (RBCs) in the bone marrow. Once produced, these RBCs are released into the bloodstream, which aids in treating anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease or those undergoing chemotherapy.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin Beta include headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and hypersensitivity.

Expert Advice

It is administered as a single injection under your skin; however, if you are on hemodialysis, it will be given into your vein.
Regularly monitor your blood pressure while taking this medication.
Inform your doctor if you notice symptoms of very high blood pressure, such as:
- Severe headache
- Problems with your eyesight
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Seizures
Your doctor may order regular blood tests to monitor levels of:
- Hemoglobin
- Blood cells
- Electrolytes, such as potassium
Inform your doctor if you have experienced a heart attack or stroke in the month prior to your treatment, if you have new or increasing chest pain, or if you are at risk of blood clots in the veins.
Seek medical help immediately if you develop:
- A rash
- Ulcers in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes (red and swollen eyes)
preceded by fever and/or flu-like symptoms.
