How Prothionamide Works Prothionamide is an antibiotic that slows the growth of the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Prothionamide include nausea, vomiting, depression, dizziness, diarrhea, decreased appetite, excessive salivation, metallic taste, stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth), abdominal pain, jaundice, encephalopathy, peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness in the feet and hands), psychotic disorder, breast enlargement in males, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), decreased levels of thyroid hormones, and low blood platelets.

  • Prothionamide is effective in treating tuberculosis when taken in combination with other antibacterial drugs.
  • It must be taken for several months to work properly (usually 6 months).
  • Take it with food to avoid stomach upset.
  • It can lower your blood sugar; if you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar regularly.
  • Your doctor may monitor your liver function, vision, and thyroid function while you are on this medication.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medication.
