How it Works

How Protamine sulfate works Protamine sulfate is utilized to counteract the anticoagulant effects of heparin and to stop bleeding in patients caused by heparin.

  • Inform your doctor if you have undergone heart surgery.
  • Notify your doctor if you have diabetes and have received protamine insulin.
  • Disclose any allergies to fish.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had a vasectomy or are infertile and may have antibodies to protamine, as you may be at an increased risk of experiencing an allergic reaction to protamine.
  • You will be monitored to confirm whether your blood clotting parameters are within normal limits if you are receiving multiple doses or prolonged administration of protamine.
  • You may experience a sudden drop in blood pressure, breathlessness, or chest and abdominal pain when receiving protamine.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take protamine if you are allergic to protamine sulfate or any of its ingredients.
