Potassium Nitrate + Sodium Monofluorophosphate + Triclosan is a medicated toothpaste used in the management of dental sensitivity and the prevention of dental caries and gum disease. It contains potassium nitrate (which reduces the nerve sensitivity that causes pain from hot, cold, or sweet stimuli), sodium monofluorophosphate (a fluoride source that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities), and triclosan (an antibacterial agent that reduces plaque and gum inflammation). The combination provides desensitising, anti-cavity, and anti-plaque action in a single daily toothpaste.

Dental sensitivity is a common complaint that causes sharp, short-lived pain from hot, cold, sweet, or acidic stimuli. It occurs when the dentine (the layer beneath tooth enamel) is exposed, allowing stimuli to reach the nerve through tiny tubules in the dentine. Sodium monofluorophosphate is a fluoride source. Apply a pea-sized amount of Potassium Nitrate + Sodium Monofluorophosphate + Triclosan to a soft-bristle toothbrush. Brush thoroughly for at least 2 minutes, twice daily, paying attention to the gum margin and all tooth surfaces. After brushing, spit out the foam — do not rinse vigorously with water immediately afterwards, as this washes away the fluoride before it has time to act on the enamel. For sensitivity, continue use for at least 2–4 weeks to allow the desensitising effect of potassium nitrate to build up. Triclosan is a broad-spectrum antibacterial that disrupts bacterial cell membranes and inhibits the enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase enzyme involved in bacterial fatty acid synthesis. In dental plaque, triclosan reduces the bacterial population, especially those species that lead to gum inflammation. Reducing plaque biofilm helps prevent the progression from gingivitis (gum inflammation) to periodontitis (destruction of the structures supporting teeth).

• Acidic foods and drinks (CAUTION): Avoid brushing immediately after consuming highly acidic foods. This is because the enamel is softened, and brushing can wear it further. Wait at least 30 minutes.

• Sugary foods and drinks between brushing (CAUTION): Increase cavity risk and reduce overall effectiveness.

• Topical oral preparations (CAUTION): Avoid using multiple medicated oral products at the same time without dental advice. This can reduce the efficacy of Potassium Nitrate + Sodium Monofluorophosphate + Triclosan.

• Severe gum disease or persistent oral ulcers (CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR): Gum infections like periodontitis and recurring ulcers require extensive dental treatment as Potassium Nitrate + Sodium Monofluorophosphate + Triclosan alone may not provide relief.

• Oral lichen planus or oral mucosal conditions (CAUTION): Some flavours or detergents in Potassium Nitrate + Sodium Monofluorophosphate + Triclosan can aggravate these oral conditions. Consult your dentist for alternatives.

• Recurrent oral ulcers (CAUTION): Sodium lauryl sulphate (a common toothpaste detergent) can aggravate ulcers in some people. If you get oral ulcers frequently, you may need specialised formulations.

Accidental swallowing of Potassium Nitrate + Sodium Monofluorophosphate + Triclosan, especially in young children, can cause stomach upset, nausea, and vomiting due to fluoride content. Further, large ingestions can cause more serious effects and warrant medical advice. Keep toothpaste out of reach of young children and assist them while they brush their teeth.
