Poractant Alfa

Uses

Poractant Alfa is used to treat respiratory distress syndrome.

How it Works

How Poractant Alfa works Poractant Alfa is a surfactant administered to premature infants to protect their lungs. This surfactant is a fatty substance that coats the lining of the air sacs in the lungs. This coating prevents the air sacs from collapsing and sticking together when air leaves the lungs. Surfactant production begins in infants only after the 8th month of pregnancy.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Poractant Alfa include pneumothorax, brain hemorrhage, chronic lung disease, hypoxia (decreased oxygen levels in the blood), and infection.
