Polio Vaccine

Uses

Polio Vaccine is used to prevent polio.

How it Works

How the Polio Vaccine Works The Polio Vaccine contains inactivated (killed) viruses of all three poliovirus types (I, II, and III). It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies (proteins) without actually causing the disease. In the event of infection, these antibodies prevent the spread of the virus to the brain and protect against paralysis.

Side Effects

Common side effects of the polio vaccine include vomiting, fever, injection site reactions (such as pain, swelling, and redness), irritability, tiredness, decreased appetite, and unusual crying.

Expert Advice

  • Ensure that you receive booster doses of the polio vaccine every 5 years for children and every 10 years for adults.
  • Inform your doctor before vaccination if you have:
    • a blood clotting disorder
    • high-grade fever
    • any acute illness
  • Your vaccination may need to be postponed until you recover.
  • Notify your doctor if you are currently taking any immunosuppressants or if you are infected with a disease that affects your immune system.
  • Inform your doctor if you are:
    • pregnant
    • planning to become pregnant
    • breastfeeding
  • Do not take the vaccine if you are allergic to the polio vaccine or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take the vaccine if you have a low platelet count.
  • Do not take the vaccine if you are suffering from high-grade fever or an acute illness.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Polio Vaccine necessary?
Yes, the Polio Vaccine is essential as the poliovirus can attack the nervous system and cause paralysis, particularly in the lower limbs, providing vital protection against the virus.
What is the purpose of the Polio Vaccine?
The Polio Vaccine contains live attenuated poliovirus strains (types 1, 2, and 3) and is used for polio prevention in infants aged 6-12 weeks, unimmunized children up to 18 years, and high-risk adults. Adults should receive the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV).
Is the Polio Vaccine more effective than IPV?
No, the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is generally considered more effective than the live Polio Vaccine. However, IPV is more expensive and harder to administer. The live vaccine has led to more polio cases compared to IPV, making IPV the preferred option for preventing outbreaks.
When should the Polio Vaccine be administered?
Children typically receive 4 doses of the Polio Vaccine: the first at 2 months, followed by doses at 4 months, 6–18 months, and 4–6 years. Sometimes, it is included in combination vaccines, potentially resulting in a fifth dose. Adults who were vaccinated as children do not require additional vaccination.
What are the types of polio vaccines available?
There are two types of polio vaccines: the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), which is administered via injection, and the oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), which is taken by mouth.
