Polidocanol is used in the treatment of varicose veins.
How it Works
How Polidocanol works Polidocanol belongs to a class of medications known as sclerosing agents. It locally damages the endothelium of blood vessels, leading to platelet aggregation, which results in the formation of blood clots and scar tissue. This process reduces the lumen of some enlarged veins.
Expert Advice
- This injection is directly administered into the varicose veins, and the number of injections given will depend on the number of varicose veins present.
- During the injection process, you will be continuously monitored for any adverse effects.
- You should wear a compression bandage or stocking soon after the injection:
- Continuously for 2 to 3 days
- During the daytime for 2 to 3 weeks
- This helps prevent clot formation.
- You should also walk for 15-20 minutes post-therapy while wearing the compression bandage.
- Avoid heavy or strenuous exercise for 2-3 days following therapy.
- Long-distance travel while sitting (in a car or airplane) should also be avoided.
- Avoid exposure to sunlight for 2-3 days post-treatment.
- Take precautions as advised by your doctor before applying ice or heating pads to the treated leg.
