Pamidronate is used in the treatment of high calcium levels in the blood and osteoporosis.
How it Works
How Pamidronate works Pamidronate is a bisphosphonate that functions by suppressing the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone destruction. This action strengthens the bones and minimizes the risk of fractures.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Pamidronate include headache, diarrhea, low blood platelets, joint pain, muscle pain, vomiting, conjunctivitis, nausea, decreased potassium levels in the blood, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, decreased phosphate levels in the blood, decreased calcium levels in the blood, fever, anemia (low number of red blood cells), atrial fibrillation, decreased magnesium levels in the blood, high blood pressure, bone pain, constipation, flu-like symptoms, tiredness, lymphocytopenia, granulocytopenia, sleep disturbances, skin rash, generalized pain, hydronephrosis, and infusion site reactions.

- It is important to care for your mouth and teeth while on this medication.
- Schedule regular dental check-ups and inform your dentist that you are taking Pamidronate.
- Pamidronate is administered by injection into a vein, typically over at least 15 minutes or as directed by your doctor.
- Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and kidney damage.
- Calcium and vitamin D supplements may be necessary as recommended by your doctor.
- You may experience fever or flu-like symptoms, such as chills, tiredness, and weakness; these are usually temporary and should resolve in a few days.
- You may take a pain reliever or fever reducer to alleviate these symptoms.
- Pamidronate may cause a rare condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw.
- Have regular dental check-ups and inform your doctor if you experience sudden jaw pain.
- Your doctor will monitor your response to Pamidronate by testing your bone mineral density (BMD), typically every 1-3 years.
- Do not take Pamidronate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
