Uses

Oxyphenonium is used in the treatment of pain caused by smooth muscle spasms. It is effective for alleviating pain associated with intestinal and stomach ulcers.

How it Works

How Oxyphenonium works Oxyphenonium exerts its action through a dual mechanism. Firstly, it has a specific anticholinergic effect (antimuscarinic) at the acetylcholine receptor sites. Secondly, it has a direct effect on smooth muscle (musculotropic).

Side Effects

Common side effects of Oxyphenonium include dryness in the mouth, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats), photophobia, slow heart rate, constipation, nausea, confusion, vomiting, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, urinary retention, reduced bronchial secretions, tachycardia, and giddiness.

  • Take it at the same time every day, either with or without food.
  • Do not skip any doses and complete the entire course as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Dry mouth may occur as a side effect; frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene, increased water intake, and sugarless candy may help alleviate this.
