How Oxyphenonium works Oxyphenonium exerts its action through a dual mechanism. Firstly, it has a specific anticholinergic effect (antimuscarinic) at the acetylcholine receptor sites. Secondly, it has a direct effect on smooth muscle (musculotropic).

Common side effects of Oxyphenonium include dryness in the mouth, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats), photophobia, slow heart rate, constipation, nausea, confusion, vomiting, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, urinary retention, reduced bronchial secretions, tachycardia, and giddiness.
