How Octreotide acetate works: Octreotide acetate is similar to somatostatin, a substance normally found in the human body that inhibits the effects of certain hormones, including growth hormone. It also reduces bleeding from the esophagus by constricting (narrowing) the blood vessels.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Octreotide acetate include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, flatulence, headache, increased blood glucose levels, gallstones, and injection site reactions.

  • Octreotide acetate is used to treat acromegaly and certain hormone-producing tumors of the stomach, liver, and pancreas.
  • It is administered as an injection either under the skin or into a vein.
  • Temporary pain at the injection site may occur; this can be alleviated by gently rubbing the area for a few seconds afterward.
  • When used long-term, your doctor may regularly monitor the following:
