Uses

Obinutuzumab is used in the treatment of blood cancer, specifically chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

How it Works

How Obinutuzumab works Obinutuzumab functions by identifying and binding to specific proteins, specifically CD20, found on leukemia cells as well as some healthy blood cells. It eliminates leukemia cells directly or with the assistance of the immune system.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Obinutuzumab include nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), upper respiratory tract infection, rash, flu, dermatitis, bronchitis (inflammation of the airways), eczema, swelling of lymph nodes, and oropharyngeal pain.

Expert Advice

  • After starting treatment with Obinutuzumab, you may be at risk of infection; therefore, try to avoid crowds or individuals with colds, and report any fever or other signs of infection immediately to your doctor.
  • Drink at least two to three quarts of fluid every 24 hours, unless instructed otherwise.
  • To reduce nausea, take anti-nausea medications as prescribed by your doctor and consume small, frequent meals.
  • Your doctor may monitor your blood counts before you start taking this medication and regularly throughout your treatment.
  • Avoid taking any other vaccines without consulting your doctor.
  • It may cause dizziness for the first few days; rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down for an extended period.
  • Avoid breastfeeding while taking Obinutuzumab and for six months after your last dose.
  • Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during and for six months after treatment with this medication.
