Norfloxacin + Tinidazole contains Norfloxacin and Tinidazole, which are combined antibiotics used to treat mixed infections. Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone that kills many bacteria, while Tinidazole targets anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Together, Norfloxacin + Tinidazole is used for selected gastrointestinal and genital infections, such as bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea or mixed vaginal infections, helping to clear the infection and reduce symptoms.

Norfloxacin + Tinidazole combines Norfloxacin, a broad‑spectrum fluoroquinolone, and Tinidazole, a 5‑nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antianaerobic agent. Norfloxacin stops bacterial DNA replication, killing many bacteria that cause urinary and gut infections. Tinidazole damages the DNA of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa such as Trichomonas vaginalis and some anaerobic gut bacteria.

This combination is used for short‑term treatment of infections where both aerobic and anaerobic organisms are suspected, such as certain acute intestinal infections and selected gynaecological infections (like pelvic‑inflammatory disease or bacterial vaginosis with sensitive organisms). Symptoms usually improve within a few days when used as prescribed. It should be taken only for bacterial/protozoal infections and not for viral illnesses like the common cold.

Intestinal Infections

Treatment of diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or fever due to bacterial and protozoal gut infections.

Genital‑Tract Infections

Use in selected cases of pelvic‑inflammatory disease or mixed vaginal infections when sensitive organisms are suspected.

Bacterial Vaginosis‑Type Infections

Management of bacterial vaginosis or mixed genital infections responsive to this combination.

• Single‑Tablet Combination (where available): Simplifies dosing compared with multiple separate medicines.

• May Prevent Complications: By treating the infection effectively, it can reduce the risk of spread or chronic pelvic problems.

While Norfloxacin + Tinidazole is generally well‑tolerated, some patients may experience side effects.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea or Upset Stomach: Mild nausea, bloating, or loss of appetite.

• Diarrhoea or Loose Stools: Mild diarrhoea due to the antibiotic effect on gut flora.

• Headache or Dizziness: Mild lightheadedness or headache.

Uncommon Side Effects

• Vomiting or Abdominal Cramps: More severe stomach upset or cramping.

• Metallic Taste or Dry Mouth: Often noticed with Tinidazole.

• Rash or Itching: Mild skin reaction.

Serious Side Effects (Require Immediate Medical Attention)

• Severe or Blood‑in‑Stool Diarrhoea: May indicate Clostridioides difficile‑associated colitis.

• Severe Allergic Reaction: Rash, swelling of the face/tongue, or trouble breathing.

• Nerve‑Related Symptoms: Tingling, numbness, or burning in hands/feet (rare with fluoroquinolones).

• Seizures or Confusion: Rare central‑nervous‑system effects of Tinidazole or Norfloxacin.

• Liver‑Related Symptoms: Jaundice, dark urine, or severe abdominal pain.

Norfloxacin + Tinidazole should be taken exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily for a short course. Swallow with water, preferably with or after food, to reduce stomach upset. Avoid taking antacids containing magnesium or aluminium within 2 hours of Norfloxacin, as they can reduce absorption. Complete the full course even if you feel better to prevent relapse or resistance. Do not take extra doses if you feel unwell, and stop and contact your doctor for severe side effects.

Norfloxacin + Tinidazole works through two components. Norfloxacin blocks bacterial DNA‑gyrase and topoisomerase‑IV, stopping DNA replication and killing susceptible bacteria. Tinidazole enters anaerobic bacteria and protozoa and damages their DNA, stopping their growth or killing them. This dual action treats infections involving both aerobic and anaerobic organisms, especially in the gut and genital tract.

• Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep note of when your diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, or fever started, what makes them worse, and how they improve after starting Norfloxacin + Tinidazole; share this with your doctor so the treatment can be reviewed or changed if needed.

• Complete the Full Course: Take Norfloxacin + Tinidazole for the full number of days prescribed, even if you feel better early, to fully clear the infection and reduce the risk of resistant bacteria.

• Avoid alcohol completely: Do not drink alcohol while taking Norfloxacin + Tinidazole or for at least 3 days after Tinidazole is stopped, as it can cause severe nausea, vomiting, flushing, and a fast heartbeat.

• Stay Hydrated If You Have Diarrhoea: Drink plenty of clean fluids (oral rehydration solutions, water, or coconut water) if you have diarrhoea to prevent dehydration, unless your doctor restricts your fluid intake.

• Use Sun Protection: Norfloxacin can increase sensitivity to sunlight; avoid strong sun exposure and use sunscreen or protective clothing to reduce the risk of sunburn or rash.

• Review Your Other Medicines: Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially iron, magnesium‑ or aluminium‑containing antacids, blood thinners, or drugs that affect the nervous system, as they may interact with this combination.

• Stop and Seek Help for Severe Side Effects: If you develop severe or bloody diarrhoea, rash, swelling of face/tongue, difficulty breathing, numbness or tingling in hands/feet, fits, or confusion, stop taking Norfloxacin + Tinidazole and seek urgent medical help.

• Alcohol (SEVERE): Avoid alcohol completely during treatment and for at least 3 days after Tinidazole; it can cause a severe disulfiram‑like reaction.

• Magnesium/Aluminium Antacids or Iron (MODERATE): Take these products at least 2 hours before or after Norfloxacin + Tinidazole, as they reduce Norfloxacin absorption.

• Other Fluoroquinolones or CNS‑active Drugs (MODERATE): Combining with other drugs that affect the nervous system may increase dizziness, seizures, or nerve‑related symptoms; use only under medical advice.

• Blood Thinners (MODERATE): Some fluoroquinolones can affect blood thinners; your doctor may review doses or check clotting if needed.

• Probiotics or Oral Contraceptives (MILD): Antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives; use backup contraception and discuss with your doctor.

• Severe Liver Disease (MODERATE): In liver disease, both Norfloxacin and Tinidazole may accumulate; your doctor may change or stop the medicine.

• Severe Kidney Disease (MODERATE): In poor kidney function, the Norfloxacin dose may need adjustment or an alternative chosen.

• Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders (MODERATE): Fluoroquinolones and Tinidazole can lower the seizure threshold; use with caution and under medical supervision.

If you miss a dose and it is not close to the next dose, take it when you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose, as this can increase nausea, dizziness, or nervous‑system side effects. Use a pill organiser or phone reminders to help you stay on track.
