How Rifampicin and Isoniazid Work Rifampicin and Isoniazid are a combination of two antibiotics that treat tuberculosis (TB). Rifampicin inactivates a bacterial enzyme, RNA polymerase, which is essential for TB bacteria to produce vital proteins and reproduce. Isoniazid prevents these bacteria from forming their protective covering. Together, they kill the bacteria and eradicate the infection.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Rifampicin and Isoniazid include vomiting, nausea, peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness in the hands and feet), abdominal pain, skin rash, itching, hepatitis (viral infection of the liver), dizziness, lethargy, and low blood platelets.

You have been prescribed Rifampicin + Isoniazid for the treatment of tuberculosis.
Complete the full course of the medication, even if you feel better. Stopping it early may cause the infection to return.
Take the medication on an empty stomach, preferably at the same time every day.
It may cause discolouration of your urine, sweat, saliva, and tears to a reddish-orange color. This is normal and not harmful.
Your doctor may check your liver function before starting treatment and regularly thereafter.
Inform your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin
- Dark urine
- Stomach pain
