How Irinotecan works Irinotecan is an anti-cancer medication that functions by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called topoisomerase I, which is involved in the DNA replication of cancer cells. This action slows the growth of cancer cells and ultimately leads to their death.

Common side effects of Irinotecan include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, weakness, hair loss, fever, anemia (low red blood cell count), diarrhea, decreased white blood cell count (neutrophils), decreased appetite, and mucosal inflammation.
