Insulin Lispro

Uses

Insulin Lispro is used in the treatment of diabetes. It is recommended for patients with diabetes mellitus who require insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Additionally, it aids in the initial stabilization of diabetes mellitus.

How it Works

How Insulin Lispro works Insulin Lispro is a fast-acting insulin that begins to work within 10 to 20 minutes after injection. It functions similarly to the insulin produced by the body. Insulin facilitates the uptake of glucose in muscle and fat cells and also inhibits the release of glucose from the liver.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Insulin Lispro include hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), weight gain, infusion site reactions, headache, pain, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), and auto-antibody formation.

  • Unopened vials must be stored in the refrigerator (2°C–8°C).

Frequently asked questions

Insulin Lispro should be injected subcutaneously. Your doctor will advise on the injection sites, which include the abdomen, buttocks, upper legs, and upper arms. Avoid injecting into the same spot repeatedly and do not inject into muscles or veins. Rotate injection sites every week or two to minimize blood sugar fluctuations.
Unopened cartridges and unused pre-filled pens of Insulin Lispro should be refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C. Do not freeze. Once a cartridge is in use, it should be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) and used within 28 days.
Before injecting, wash your hands and clean the injection site. Remove the pen cap, attach the needle, select the prescribed dose, and hold the pen at a 90-degree angle to the skin. Press the dose button and hold for 10 seconds to ensure complete injection. Afterward, remove and discard the needle, replace the pen cap, and store it properly.
Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take Insulin Lispro for life due to insufficient insulin production. Type 2 diabetes patients may discontinue it if they manage their condition effectively through diet, exercise, and oral medications, as advised by their doctor.
Yes, Insulin Lispro is safe in pregnancy when prescribed by a doctor. Consult your healthcare provider if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using it, as dosage adjustments and more frequent blood glucose monitoring may be necessary.
Yes, priming the pen is necessary to remove air from the needle and insulin. Dial 2 units, hold the pen vertically, and press the dose button until a drop appears at the needle tip. Repeat if necessary if using the pen for the first time.
The most common side effect of Insulin Lispro is hypoglycemia, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, headache, irritability, hunger, sweating, dizziness, rapid heart rate, and anxiety. Hypoglycemia is more likely if meals are missed, alcohol is consumed, excessive exercise occurs, or if other antidiabetic medications are taken. Regular blood sugar monitoring is essential, and it's advisable to carry sugary snacks or drinks.
No, Insulin Lispro should not be mixed with any other insulin preparations, nor should it be combined from vials with those in cartridges.
