How Gentamicin and Hydrocortisone work Gentamicin and Hydrocortisone is a combination of two medicines: Gentamicin and Hydrocortisone. Gentamicin is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth in the eye by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria for vital functions. Hydrocortisone is a steroid that blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) responsible for making the eye red, swollen, and itchy.
