Gemcitabine and Mannitol are used in the treatment of cancer.
How Gemcitabine and Mannitol Work Gemcitabine and Mannitol is a combination of two medications: Gemcitabine and Mannitol. Gemcitabine interferes with the growth of DNA and RNA in cancer cells by substituting their building blocks, preventing the cancer cells from growing and multiplying. Mannitol is an inert substance with high osmotic pressure that draws water into the kidneys, increasing urine production. Additionally, Mannitol is used to lower pressure inside the eye and to reduce swelling around the brain.
Common side effects of Gemcitabine and Mannitol include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased blood cell counts (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets), rash, increased liver enzymes, blood in urine, protein in urine, and breathlessness.
