How it Works

How Estramustine works Estramustine belongs to a class of anticancer and cytotoxic drugs known as antimicrotubule agents. It functions by disrupting the production of specific proteins essential for tumor cell growth and reproduction. Additionally, it raises estrogen levels, which in turn affects prostate cancer by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Side Effects

Common side effects of estramustine include nausea, vomiting, anemia (low red blood cell count), diarrhea, breast enlargement in males, decreased white blood cell count (lymphocytes), fluid retention, heart failure, and liver dysfunction.

Expert Advice

  • Estramustine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
  • Avoid taking antacids, calcium or magnesium supplements, milk products, and multivitamins, as these may interfere with the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Your doctor may perform regular blood tests to monitor your calcium levels, liver function, and blood cell count.
  • Use an effective method of birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication.
