Uses

Drospirenone is used for contraception. It is employed to prevent pregnancy in combination with another medication.

How it Works

How Drospirenone works Drospirenone is a progestin, a type of female hormone. It prevents pregnancy by inhibiting the release of an egg from the ovary or by preventing fertilization of the egg by sperm. Additionally, it may alter the lining of the uterus to prevent the development of a pregnancy.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Drospirenone include acne, metrorrhagia (menstrual bleeding at irregular intervals), headache, nausea, breast pain, weight gain, pain during periods, vaginal bleeding, decreased libido, breast tenderness, and menstrual disorders.

Expert Advice

  • Do not take drospirenone if you or your family has a history of:
    • Breast cancer
    • Liver disease or gallbladder disease
    • Diabetes
    • Depression
    • Seizures (fits)
    • Serious inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis)
    • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (a disorder of blood clotting causing kidney failure)
    • Sickle cell anemia (an inherited condition with abnormal red blood cell shape)
    • Elevated levels of fat in the blood
  • Do not take drospirenone if you are:
    • About to undergo surgery
    • Bed-ridden or immobile for an extended period
    • Recently given birth
  • Avoid taking drospirenone if you have:
    • Pain and swelling over one or more veins under the skin
    • Varicose veins
    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease causing joint pain, swelling, fever, skin rash, etc.)
    • Discoloration of the skin on the face or neck known as "pregnancy patches" (chloasma)
    • Hereditary swelling of the lips and face (angioedema)
  • Drospirenone must be taken with ethinyl estradiol starting from Day 2-5 of your menstrual cycle. However, dosage may vary depending on your condition. Please follow your doctor's instructions, as correct usage is critical.
  • Avoid direct sunlight or ultraviolet light.
  • Consult a doctor if you experience symptoms of a blood clot, characterized by:
    • Pain, swelling, and warmth in the affected leg (deep vein thrombosis)
    • Breathlessness or irregular heartbeat (thrombosis in the lungs)
