How Tobramycin, Dexamethasone, and Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose work Tobramycin, Dexamethasone, and Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a combination of three medicines: Tobramycin, Dexamethasone, and Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. Tobramycin is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required for vital bacterial functions. Dexamethasone is a steroid medication that blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) responsible for redness, swelling, and itching in the eye or ear. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a lubricating formulation that moistens the eyes or ears.
