How Darbepoetin alfa works Darbepoetin alfa is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA). It works by stimulating the bone marrow, the soft tissue inside the bones that produces red blood cells, to increase the production of red blood cells.

Common side effects of Darbepoetin alfa include high blood pressure, rash, injection site pain, breathlessness, cough, peripheral edema, procedural hypotension (low blood pressure), convulsions, and thromboembolism.
