Conivaptan Uses Conivaptan is used in the treatment of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) and low sodium levels in the blood. It addresses hyponatremia, which can result from conditions such as hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency, and pulmonary disorders in hospitalized patients.
How Conivaptan works Conivaptan is a vasopressin antagonist. It functions by blocking the effects of the hormone vasopressin in the body. This action increases urine production, reduces the amount of water in the blood, and raises blood sodium levels.
Common side effects of Conivaptan include headache, anemia (low number of red blood cells), infusion site reaction, decreased potassium levels in the blood, decreased magnesium levels in the blood, decreased sodium levels in the blood, and hypotension (low blood pressure).
