Additionally, it is known to have a cytoprotective effect and enhances the mucosal secretion of prostaglandins and bicarbonate.

Common side effects of colloidal bismuth subcitrate include black tongue, dark-colored stool, nausea, vomiting, bone toxicity, and joint toxicity.
