How Cholestyramine works Cholestyramine is a bile acid binding agent that removes bile acids from the body. The liver then produces more bile acids using cholesterol, resulting in lowered levels of cholesterol in the body.

- Always take Cholestyramine with food and a full glass of water.
- It may interfere with the absorption of vitamins such as A, D, and K.
- Take supplements of these vitamins as recommended by your doctor.
- Cholestyramine can delay or decrease the absorption of certain medications.
- Any other medication should be taken 1 hour before or 4 hours after taking Cholestyramine.
- Cholestyramine helps lower high blood cholesterol levels.
- It should be taken along with regular exercise and a low-fat diet.
- It may cause constipation; therefore, drink plenty of water and consume more high-fiber foods.
- Inform your doctor if constipation becomes severe or does not resolve.
