Guaifenesin, Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, and Phenylpropanolamine is a combination of four medications that relieve cough. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that decreases the stickiness of mucus (phlegm) and aids in its removal from the airways. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that alleviates allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that reduces the activity of the cough center in the brain, thereby relieving cough. Phenylpropanolamine is a decongestant that narrows small blood vessels, providing relief from nasal congestion or stuffiness.
Common side effects of Guaifenesin, Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, and Phenylpropanolamine include nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, headache, rash, hives, sleepiness, high blood pressure, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), and palpitations.
