How Ornidazole and Chlorhexidine Gluconate Work Ornidazole and Chlorhexidine Gluconate is a combination of two medications used to treat mouth infections. Ornidazole is an antibiotic that eliminates bacteria and other microorganisms by damaging their DNA. Chlorhexidine Gluconate is an antiseptic that adheres to the surfaces of teeth, inner cheeks, and gums, effectively killing the infectious microorganisms responsible for gum disease, tartar, and other oral infections.

Common side effects of Ornidazole and Chlorhexidine Gluconate include taste changes and a bitter taste.

Expert Advice

Apply the medication to the affected area using a clean fingertip, three to four times a day or as directed by your doctor.
Do not skip any doses and complete the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better.
After application, wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything.
Avoid contact with the eyes or nose. If accidental exposure occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
Inform your doctor if the infection does not resolve after four weeks of treatment.
