How Silver Sulfadiazine, Chlorhexidine Gluconate, and Metronidazole work Silver Sulfadiazine, Chlorhexidine Gluconate, and Metronidazole is a combination of two antibiotics (Silver Sulfadiazine and Metronidazole) and one antiseptic (Chlorhexidine Gluconate). The antibiotics eliminate bacteria and other microorganisms that infect a burn or wound. The antiseptic binds strongly to the skin to effectively cleanse the area and prevent reinfection.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Silver Sulfadiazine, Chlorhexidine Gluconate, and Metronidazole include application site reactions such as burning, irritation, itching, and redness, as well as a transient increase in white blood cell count (eosinophils).

  • Clean the affected area thoroughly.
  • Apply the cream using a sterile gloved hand or a sterile spatula.
  • Apply the cream once or twice daily.
  • Reapply to any areas from which it has been removed due to activity.
  • Burn areas should be covered with the cream at all times.
  • Minor burning, stinging, or irritation may occur upon application; inform your doctor if these symptoms persist.
  • Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • If the cream accidentally gets into these areas, rinse thoroughly with water.
