Carbetocin

Uses

Carbetocin is used in the treatment of bleeding.

How it Works

How Carbetocin works Carbetocin belongs to a class of medications known as oxytocin receptor agonists. Oxytocin is the hormone that facilitates muscle contractions during labor. This medication binds to oxytocin receptors located on the smooth muscles of the uterus, promoting muscle contractions. These rhythmic contractions of the uterus assist in childbirth and help prevent excessive bleeding following delivery.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Carbetocin include nausea, stomach pain, itching, headache, flushing (a sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck, and trunk), hypotension (low blood pressure), tremors, vomiting, back pain, chest pain, metallic taste, anemia (a low number of red blood cells), breathlessness, chills, and generalized pain.
