How Canagliflozin Works Canagliflozin is an anti-diabetic medication. It functions by eliminating excess sugar from the body through urine.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Canagliflozin include urinary tract infection, increased thirst, nausea, constipation, genital fungal infection, polyuria, and rash.

Expert Advice

  • Canagliflozin is used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications to control blood sugar levels and prevent long-term complications.
  • It may lead to dehydration or increased urination. Ensure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) may occur when used with other antidiabetic medications, alcohol, or if you delay or miss a meal.
  • Always carry sugary food or fruit juice in case you experience hypoglycemia symptoms, such as:
    • Cold sweats
    • Cool, pale skin
    • Tremors
    • Anxiety
  • Canagliflozin can cause genital fungal infections and/or urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both females and males; therefore, practice good hygiene.
  • Regularly monitor your blood sugar while taking this medication.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you experience:
    • Constant dizziness
    • Joint pain
    • Cold-like symptoms
    • Unexplained nausea or vomiting
  • Canagliflozin also reduces the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and other cardiovascular events.
  • Continue to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, and take your other prescribed diabetes medications alongside Canagliflozin.
  • It may contribute to weight loss and lower blood pressure.
